7 Easy Ways to Practice Self-Care

Self-care is not “selfish.” It is quite the opposite. How can you be your best self in any other aspect of your life if you’re not taking care of you? Making sure your mind, body, and soul are well-cared for is essential.

It’s so easy to slip into a pattern of bad habits that are detrimental to our own well-being. Many of us make sure that everyone around us is is taken care of, then we have no time or energy to focus on ourselves.

So, here are a few tips to get you started on practicing self-care, even if you have a busy life!

Schedule some alone time each day

Take some time each day to unwind, unplug, and just “be.” Even if it’s on your lunch break at work or 20 minutes before you go to bed at night, you will be surprised at how beneficial it is to step away from everything that’s going on in your life and take a breather. This will also help you regain focus on whatever it is you need to do next.

Meet up with a friend for coffee or lunch

It can be hard to find time for friends, especially as we get older and focus on our career and/or family. For this reason, it’s important to schedule your next “date” while you’re together and checking your calendars. Otherwise, it may never happen.

Plan a weekly date night

If you have a significant other, set aside some time each week to be together one-on-one. You don’t even have to go out! After the kids are in bed, watch a movie together, play video games, or just talk. Staying in tune with each other as a couple is so important for your own well-being.

Pay attention to your diet

This one may seem obvious, but with our hectic schedules it is easy to forget these things or fall into bad habits with our diet. Making sure you’re drinking enough water is key. It’s amazing how much diet can affect our mood and how we feel.

Keep a journal

Write down your thoughts, hopes, dreams, or frustrations – just let it all out. It’s a therapeutic practice.

Practice some form of exercise

Take a walk. If it’s cold or rainy outside, do some indoor exercises. Even putting on some music and dancing is a fun way to get those endorphins flowing.

Laugh a lot

Never take yourself too seriously. Watch a funny movie, talk about old times, look through photos – anything you do to put a smile on your face will bring on the positive vibes.

Some of these practices may be easier to stick to than others. Don’t beat yourself up. Every little bit helps. Just incorporating a few of these practices into your routine can get you on track to becoming the best version of you.

  1. As a mother, I am learning that self care is so important. I am also learning that it doesn’t have to be an extravagant day of massages and mani/pedis. It could be as simple as reading a book. I am finding more time for the simple ones. These are such great ideas! Thank you for sharing.
