Gray Hair, Don’t Care – How to Get Rid of Those Pesky Roots

I’m a woman in my late 30’s. The hair growing from my head is completely gray. It pained me to write both of those sentences. I’ve considered myself very lucky with my gene pool, so I shouldn’t complain about this one very annoying thing that I have to deal with, right? Both my mother and my grandmother went gray prematurely, so it was kind of my destiny.

I remember seeing my first gray hair sticking out of the middle of my head back when I was a senior in college.  I didn’t think too much of it at the time.  Every time I would see another one sprout, I would take my tweezers and pluck it.  That seemed to do the job for a few years.

I should probably add that I have always colored my hair for the heck of it – dye, highlights, etc.  Now that I actually have to dye the grays, I wish I hadn’t messed with the color back then.

Side note: I am not saying anyone HAS to dye their grays.  If you like it, rock it.  I just can’t go there quite yet.  Anyway, back to the story. By the time I was in my late 20’s my roots were coming out mostly gray, and now, a decade later, the transition to full gray is about complete.

As I said, I’ve always dyed my hair for fun.  Guess what? It’s not fun anymore.  It’s a chore!  I alternate between dyeing my roots and doing the full coverage.

I know I could go to a salon and have this chore done by someone else while I relax, but alas, I am too cheap. 😊

I have very thick, coarse, curly hair that is super dry.  So, I can get away with shampooing only twice a week.  This helps to make the color last a bit longer.  I typically touch-up the roots or dye my hair every six weeks.

For many years, I’ve been using
Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Root Touch-Up – 004 Dark Brown – 1 kit Dark Brown-4 for the roots between colorings and Clairol Nice’n Easy Permanent Hair Color Medium Natural Brown 5N for an all-over color and I really like the results.

I do a light to medium brown shade, so I try not to leave the dye on the ends for very long or they get too dark compared to my roots.

Another product that I’m wanting to try for quick touch-ups is this root spray. Let me know if you’ve tried it before because I’d love to know how it works.

Maybe one day I will splurge and treat myself to a salon coloring. Or maybe the older I get I will just embrace it and let the gray grow!

What do you guys think about women coloring their hair?  If you color, what products do you use?  I’m up for suggestions/tips/tricks.

Have a great day and remember to love yourself no matter what!

  1. I am in my early 30s and my roots are starting to show some gray! Thank you for the product review. I am starting to look into products that are easy enough to use since I never dyed my hair ever!

    1. It’s fun, isn’t it? We shouldn’t have to worry about this already. I hope you find some products that work well for you. It’s great that you haven’t used dye on your hair yet! Thanks for reading. 😊
